Triton offers scholarship in memory of Maywood teen

News Release

River Grove, Ill. – Dominique Thomas had dreams of becoming an engineer even though it is a male-dominated field. The Maywood teen fueled her dream in the summer of 2011 by participating in a summer manufacturing camp at Triton College, called GADgET. The camp, which stands for Girls Adventuring in Design Engineering and Technology and is partly funded through a grant from Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs (NBT), the foundation of the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, Intl. (FMA), gave 16 local girls the opportunity to learn more about engineering as a career and gain hands-on experience in developing their ideas and working with heavy-duty machinery to build their one-of-a-kind inventions.

The summer camp will be offered again this year, but unfortunately, without Dominique who lost her life in a tragic accident just a few weeks after completing her camp experience. However, her passion for engineering will live on in a scholarship created by NBT and Triton in her honor. The Dominique’s Dream Scholarship is being offered to full-time female students who are enrolled in a degree program at Triton College that will lead to a technical career in manufacturing. Triton’s degree in engineering technology qualifies for the scholarship, which will provide up to $1,500 for tuition, fees and books. For more information about the scholarship, visit the Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs website. Application deadline for the fall 2013 semester is March 22, 2013. Applications for the spring 2014 semester are due by Sept. 20, 2013.
