Community-wide walk and donation drive to raise awareness of veterans in need on April 27

River Grove, Ill. – Join Triton College in taking the first step toward ending veteran hunger and homelessness in the surrounding communities on Saturday, April 27.

Triton’s A Step for Vets will recognize the service of our brave men and women veterans as well as raise awareness concerning veteran hunger and homelessness with a walk and donation drive. The free community event symbolizes our shared commitment in providing a service to our vets to help them transition from the battlefield back into their communities.

“Triton College is committed to serving the veterans of our communities,” said Dr. Quincy Martin III, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs. “Through the collaborative efforts of our faith-based organizations, community service agencies and local businesses, it is our desire to bring together individuals and groups with a passion to give back and serve our heroes. Our veterans need us, and we are here to help.”

Throughout the day, donations will be collected, including non-perishable food items, gently used or new clothing and personal hygiene items, such as toothpaste and soap, to support Hines VA Hospital’s outreach to homeless veterans. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

“We are exceptionally pleased with the participation of our local parishes and organizations. Several of them have agreed to collect donations at their sites, and the number continues to grow,” Martin said.

Many of these area parishes and community organizations offer services to veterans that individuals can learn more about at the event.

A Step for Vets will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include a warm-up Zumba class at 10 a.m., with the opening ceremony and walk beginning at 10:30 a.m. around the mounds on the west side of Triton College’s main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., in River Grove.

A children’s activity area, refreshments and live entertainment will be available throughout the day. Plus, food will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting the Hines VA Hospital. Participants are invited to come and walk the course any time from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to show their support for veterans. Registration is free. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside the Robert M. Collins Center.

The event is sponsored by McDonald’s restaurant at 8800 W. Grand Ave. in River Grove.
