New courses at Nuevos Horizontes bring dreams of a career within reach
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 15, 2013
Nuevos Horizontes, Triton College’s community center in Melrose Park, will offer several new programs in fall 2013 to put prospective students on the fast – and convenient – track to obtaining a career.
Starting in the fall, Nuevos Horizontes will offer a fast-track, intensive program for students to become professional bilingual office assistants in six months. The four-day-a-week program, set to begin the first week in September, asks for prospective students to be bilingual in English and Spanish, have basic computer skills and be able to type at least 20 words per minute.
The program is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of computers and typing and are interested in working in an office environment to get them into a career quicker.
Nuevos Horizontes Executive Director Dr. Luisa Hernandez said there is a high demand for bilingual office assistants in the area, from doctor’s and dentist’s offices to manufacturing companies. Plus, bilingual office assistants are often paid well, due to their ability to communicate in two languages, she added.
An orientation for the Professional Bilingual Office Assistant fast-track program is at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, at Nuevos Horizontes, 1708 Main St., in Melrose Park.
Also to come, Nuevos Horizontes will begin offering several three credit-hour classes at its Melrose Park location, providing convenience to many area students working to fulfill their required developmental
education and/or general education courses in pursuit of their degree or certificate. Classes include Introduction to Business, Business Computations, Introduction to College Reading II, Introduction to College Writing I and Principles of Effective Speaking.
“We’re trying to bring the courses to the students and provide them an additional location to access Triton College to attend these classes they need to graduate,” Hernandez said.
The classes are in addition to Nuevos’ Early Childhood Education bilingual courses and certification courses in floral design, cake decorating, and basic computer skills. Nuevos Horizontes also offers citizenship and GED preparation courses and opens its doors to the community for free computer lab access.
Registration for classes is currently open! To register, contact the Triton College Admissions Call Center at (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3130. For information in Spanish, contact Nuevos Horizontes at (708) 649-2101.
