Moms and dads, sons and daughters and old friends returned to their alma mater to share a bit of their past with their families. The inaugural Alumni Family Picnic welcomed families on campus for fun and games on June 8, as Triton graduates reminisced with their family members about their time at Triton.

Radiologic Technology graduate Sheree Owens, class of 2005, currently resides in Carbondale, but was in the neighborhood that weekend and brought her daughter, infant son and nephew to show them her old stomping grounds and to partake in the activities. “I loved my time at Triton and wanted to show my children where I went to school,” she said. “This is a really great event to share with my children.”

Activities, such as face painting, a bags tournament, bingo, a scavenger hunt, a caricature artist and more, entertained the near 150 individuals in attendance. Families were also able to catch a laser show at the Cernan Earth and Space Center.

Director of Alumni Relations Lisa Scalessi said the response from alumni was “overwhelmingly positive.” “Our graduates and their families enjoyed returning to campus to engage in family-friendly activities,” she said. “We hope to make this an annual event to establish a tradition for our alumni and their families and children, our future Triton College alumni.”

Alvin Harvey of Bellwood graduated in 1974 with an associate’s degree in Marketing. Harvey, who was the college’s first student trustee, always tries to make it back on Triton’s campus and encourages his children to do the same. He has a son and daughter who graduated from Triton, and another son who currently attends the school. “We have a long line of Triton graduates – my granddaughter plans to come here,” he said. “It’s a wonderful school to kick start your education.”

Recent graduate Kevin Roemer said Triton was the start of his success. After receiving a scholarship, he now attends ITT. He attended the event to catch up with friends. “It’s good to be here and see how everyone I spent so much time with at Triton is doing,” he said. “This is a great event for alumni… I feel like I’m back home.”
