How has Triton College made an impact on your life?
Education has always been seen as the pathway to a better life. However, as a young lady growing up in the South, due to other responsibilities, I was not able to actively pursue my education. As an older adult, Triton College provided me the avenue to pursue my life-long drive to obtain an education. Triton provided me opportunity to obtain the necessary skills that have afforded me to further my personal and career goals.

Willie Powell graduated from Triton College in 2011 with an Associate in General Studies degree. She served as an inspiration to many non-traditional students having completed her degree at the age of 68 and was the recipient of the Star Student Award while at Triton. She later completed a Bachelor of Arts degree from National-Louis University and is anticipating completion of a Master of Arts degree in Urban Ministries from the United Faith Christian Institute and Bible College. Powell is considering continuing her education in pursuit of a doctoral degree.

Powell currently serves as a project coordinator for H.O.P.E. Inc., a non-profit that supports previously incarcerated women with their re-entry into society. Powell contributes to the organization through active participation in support groups, tutoring women in the GED program and assisting candidates with job searches and resume writing.

Powell plans to use her accomplishments to help others—both young and old—realize the value and worth of a quality education and to showcase that it is never too late to pursue those things that you have always dreamed about earning.
