2013 Season Preview
The 2013 Triton College Baseball team looks to accomplish much more than last year’s N4C Conference runner up finish. The Trojan roster has only 9 players returning from last year’s team. The team’s strength without question should be the returning of three outfielders, five pitchers and two infielders each who had seen significant time as freshman. Without an abundance of veteran leadership at key positions, the Trojans will have tough task exceed last year’s 36-18 record and mid season 22nd National Ranking. Despite the fact the Trojans have 17 new faces to the program Coach Torgerson thinks this is a very talented group.
Triton will have to rely on good team speed, defense and an offense that will provide much need pop that Coach Torgerson’s has not had in a few years. The Pitching staff has some veteran leadership however the overall depth of the staff will be young, untested and will have to have consistency in order for the Trojans to build on last year’s accomplishments.
SHORTSTOP: The left side of the infield will have plenty of competition between freshman Tyler Curtis (Marboro HS (NY)), and freshman Damian Boyum (Boca Raton HS (FL)) both should offer consistent defensive play and some offensive punch. THIRD BASE: Will be anchored by steady defensive play by freshman Alfred Iturralde (Montwood HS (TX)) and should be backed up by freshman Alex Bembenek (Rosholt HS (WI)). FIRST BASE: The right side will have stability with returning starter Trey Martin (Joliet West HS (IL)) and slick fielding Keil Conway (Flanagan HS (FL)) SECOND BASE: Sophomore Damon Softcheck (Joliet West HS (IL)) Boyum, Curtis and Conway should add depth in the middle.
Although the group lacks in numbers one of the Trojan’s strengths this year should be in the outfield with speedy core of players that should offer the good offensive punch. Justin Bard (North Broward Prep HS (FL)), Jake Pygman (Lake Park HS (IL)) are two returning starters from last year’s squad. Tyler Robbins (Jefferson HS (IN)) and Andrew Godbold (Oak Park-River Forest HS (IL)) offer flexibility for Coach Torgerson’s squad enabling him to rotate players in each of three outfield spots.
Triton’s catching duties will be handled by sophomore Kurt Donner (Prospect HS (IL)/transfer from Blackhawk College) who possesses solid defensive skills and throwing arm. Jose Miramontes (Montwood HS (TX)) and Dan Barron (St Joseph HS (IL)) are two freshman, will offer depth and competition for a starting role. The load will be on this talented group too manage a very inexperienced pitching staff and provide leadership too an overall young group of players.
The Trojan Pitching Staff will consist of six sophomore, and eight freshmen. Converted sophomore outfielder Tyler Robbins (Jefferson HS (IN)), Zach Sciaccotta (Elmwood Park HS (IL)), Joe Alley (Whitesburg HS (GA)) and Joe Scaglione (Ramapo HS (NJ)) look to compete for the top spot in the rotation. Sophomores Jim Hinkleman (Munster HS (IN)) Mike Gaither (St. Thomas Aquinas HS (FL)) and Kevin Steger (Lake Park HS (IL)) proved to be solid contributors and should compete for one of the top spots on the staff. Freshmen Scott Powell (Belleville HS (MI)), Cory Duckworth (Nova HS (FL)), Robert Guarnieri ( North Broward Prep HS (FL)), Andrew Duran (Riverside-Brookfield HS (IL)) and Barrett Peterson looks to booster the back end of the rotation and have shown they can compete and will solidify the bullpen, but can also help to improve the starting pitching. Left handers David Feliciano (Clemente HS (IL)) and Tyler Polich (St Joseph HS (IL)) look to sure up the bullpen in situational and long relief roles. Pygman, Conway and Iturralde are a trio of strong armed two-way players that will add to the overall depth of the staff.
Triton’s designated hitter will vary throughout the season. Martin, Gaither and Bard will split time there adding some power to help strengthen the Trojan lineup.
