2017 Season Preview
The 2017 Triton College Baseball team looks to add on to
the accomplishments of last year's Region IV Championship and
District runner-up finishes. The Trojan roster has only 9 players
returning from last year’s team. One of the team’s strength should be
the overall depth of the pitching staff. Inexperienced
with the bulk of the staff being freshman the few
returning sophomores need to provide leadership.
Despite the fact the Trojans added 22 new
faces to the program, Coach Torgerson thinks this is a very talented group.
will have to rely on good team speed, defense, and an
offense that will provide a much needed pop that Coach Torgerson has not had in a few years. The Pitching staff has some veteran
leadership however the overall depth of the staff will be young, untested and
will have to have consistency in order for the Trojans to compete in the tough Region IV
Shortstop: The left
side of the infield should be anchored by transfer Neil
Lambert (Arkansas St.) and be
backed up by freshman Alex Holets (Century
HS/MN). Both should offer consistent defensive play and some offensive
Third Base: Will have
plenty of competition with returner Ryan Leo (Global Institute
NY) and freshmen Dominic Gerace (Oak Park-River Forest HS/IL) and
Cody Quier (Mishawaka HS/IN) should
offer some offensive production and defense to the position.
First Base: The right
side should have some very good competition with returner. Zach
Taylor (Homewood-Flossmoor HS/IL) and
freshman Ricky West (Mequon HS/WI) Sophomore Connor Pauly (Glenbrook South HS/IL) may offer some depth when not in the Trojan pitching rotation. Sophomore Joe Dahlke will also
add some depth to spot when not catching. Each of
the three had good fall workouts and adds different elements to the
Second Base: Should
have plenty of depth with sophomore Justin
Corona (Lakes HS/IL). and Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka HS/IN) Freshman Kevin
Corona (Sandburg HS/IL) and Jeremy Borges (Leyden HS/IL) Justin Corona
will add some versatility to the position and have looked
sharp in the fall.
Although the group lacks in numbers, one of
the Trojan’s strengths this year should be in the outfield, with a speedy
core of players that should offer a good
offensive punch. Sophomore Zach Abfall (transfer from Wabash Valley) and freshmen Andy Gaytan (Sandburg HS/IL), Keith Kerrigan (Ridgewood HS/IL), Lhakpa Sherpa (Rincon HS/AZ) and Brandon Sanchez (Whitney Young HS/IL) look
to compete for spots in the outfield. Sophomore Connor Pauly looks to help add depth to the position when not
pitching. The assets of these players offer Coach Torgerson depth, flexibility, speed
and offense punch to the squad.
Triton’s catching duties will have some
experience signal callers with returners, Daulton Ryans and Anthony Tejeda (Bishop Verot HS/FL) who look to not
only add depth to the position but compete for a starting role.
Freshman Vito Iovino (Ridgewood HS/IL) has looked good in fall workouts
and expects to compete for a starting role. A load will be placed on this
talented group too manage a very untested pitching staff and
provide leadership to an overall young group of pitchers.

The Trojan Pitching Staff will consist of four sophomores
and eleven freshmen, totaling
15 in all, giving Coach Torgerson many options to go to. There is
a tremendous need to bolster the pitching staff in order compete in the expanded conference play
in the N4C and at the region and district levels. Three returning sophomores, James
Whiteman (St. Joseph HS/IN), Connor Pauly (Glenbrook
North HS/IL), and Dean Youngblood (Melissa HS/TX) look to
offer consistency near the top of the rotation. Freshman Jack
Snyder (Marist HS/IL), Alonzo White (Lincoln Way East HS/IL) look to round out 5 of the 6 man rotation. The
Trojan staff is well equipped with pitchers that offer good pitch-ability and arm
strength. Sophomore Ryan Leo adds an important swing man position on the staff. Freshman Matt Owens (Sandburg HS/IL), Joe Cundari (Oak Park-River Forest HS/IL) Ryan O'Reilly (Lincoln
Way East HS/IL) and Ben
Chaffee (Marist HS/IL) have
shown that they can get people out in any role starting or relief.
Eddy Joseph (DePaul College Prep HS/IL) and Jonah Nosek (Kettle Moraine
HS/WI) have shown promise in relief roles in the fall and offer some depth
from the left side. One of the keys to season maybe the return of Nelson
Munoz (MT. Carmel HS/IL) who
red shirted freshman year due to injury and was the 2015 Illinois Pitcher of
the Year. If the staff remains healthy and intact, should be
the best Coach Torgerson has had in his 13 year tenure at Triton.
designated hitter will vary throughout the season. Pauly, Leo, Sherpa, Sanchez, Ryans and Tejeda will
battle to see time here. Each will add some
power and production to
help strengthen the Trojan lineup.
