SCI C16 Tornado Climatology and Storm Chasing

There can hardly be a match for the anticipation and thrill of chasing the atmosphere’s most intense concentration of fury on earth. This class will capture that and bring to the students the best understanding of the dynamics which bring it about, with a thorough overview of the tremendous strides that modern science has brought to bear on life-threatening weather. Students will become familiar with the unique atmospheric conditions which allow violent weather to form, appreciate the variety of instrumentation required to monitor conditions, learn how the Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service receives data and formulates its outlooks, and find out why certain climate regimes are favored over others. Field trips to storm locations will be discussed in class.
