Triton College hosts wrestling tournament on Dec. 10

Some of the top collegiate wrestlers in the nation will , as Triton College hosts the 22nd Annual Art Kraft Memorial Tournament.

The tournament is named in honor of the late Triton coach, who guided the Trojans to three national championships in 1977, 1983 and 1984. Kraft was a three-time National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coach of the Year during his 18 seasons as Triton head coach from 1967-85.

Since its inception, the Art Kraft Memorial Tournament has grown to be one of the most prestigious wresting tournaments in the country. This year's tournament is no exception, as 23 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) ranked wrestlers will be competing for individual titles.

In addition to Triton, of the nine junior colleges participating in the 22nd Annual Art Kraft Memorial Tournament, four are nationally led by third rated Muskegon Community College (Muskegon, Mich.), sixth ranked Lincoln College (Lincoln, Ill.), 16th ranked Harper College (Palatine, Ill.) and 19th ranked Mercyhurst North East College (North East, PA).

The other college and universities participating are: Elmhurst College (Elmhurst, Ill.), Grand Valley State University (Allendale, MI), Illinois State University Club Team (Bloomington, Ill.), Kennedy-King College (Chicago, Ill.), Minnesota West Technical and Community College (Worthington, Minn.), Rend Lake College (Ina, Ill.), Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (Edwardsville, Ill.), Waubonsee Community College (Sugar Grove, Ill.) and Wright College (Chicago, Ill.).

Included in this year’s field will be four returning national qualifiers: Prentice Thomas, Lincoln, (125),  Josh Ronne, Harper, (165), Rafeal Rodriguez, Muskegon, (165) and Luis Gonzalez, Waubonsee, (197).

Also five returning NJCAA All-American will be participating in the tournament: Sean Turner, Muskegon (149), Eric Telford Muskegon (157), Khari Washington, Harper (174), Mark Marainovich (157) and Michael Johnson, Lincoln (184).

The first matches of the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. and will last all day at the Robert M. Collins Center gymnasium, on Triton's main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove.
