Triton men’s soccer player Gewargis Samuel named All-American

The Triton College men's soccer program added another All-American to their collection as Gewargis Samuel earned NJCAA Second teams honors. The sophomore out of Mather High School became the 215th Triton student-athlete to earn the prestigious honor and the fourth men's soccer player in the last five seasons to be named All-American.

Samuel was the glue to a Trojans squad that finished 13-3 en route to securing a spot in the final eight at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament last month in Herkimer, N.Y. Triton also won their third consecutive North Central Community College Conference (N4C) championship, an unprecedented fifth straight Region IV title along with the District C crown.

In addition to the All-American status, Samuel made the All-Tournament team at nationals and was a first team All-Region IV selection. Samuel recorded 20 points this past season and ended the year ranked 11th in the nation with 12 assists.

"I feel great about the accomplishment and to help keep up the tradition of Triton soccer," Samuel said. "In the preseason, I wasn't sure if we were going to be as good as the 2011 team. But we stepped up and had players who fit into their positions and played well as individuals and as team players."

Samuel, who is planning to major in criminology, has narrowed his list of potential schools to attend next fall. Dominican University in River Forest has shown interest along with Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
