Triton Softball Team Reaches Region IV Semifinals
The Triton College softball team advanced to the NJCAA Region IV Division II semifinals for the first time since 2010 after defeating Moraine Valley two games to one in a best of three opening round series Tuesday in River Grove.
The No. 3 seeded Trojans will square off against No. 2 seeded South Suburban College, Saturday, May 7, at 1 p.m., at Yorkville High School. Top seeded Kankakee Community College will play No. 4 seeded Prairie State College in the other semifinal. The four teams will be competing in a double elimination format with the Region IV championship game taking place Sunday, May 8, in Yorkville.
Triton enters the semifinals 30-23 overall. The win total equals the amount of victories the program had the last four seasons combined. First-year head coach and former Trojan standout Christina Christopher has changed the culture of the program and this week was named North Central Community College Conference (N4C) Coach of the Year.
However, her squad had to sweat it out in a tough three-game series with the No. 6 seeded Cyclones. In game one, First Team All-N4C selection Rachael Morrison’s (East Leyden) two-run homer in the fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie as Triton held off a late Moraine Valley rally to win 4-3. The Cyclones evened the series with an 8-5 win in game two.
But the Trojan bats woke up in the decisive third game, sparked by an eight-run fourth inning enroute to an 11-5 series clinching win. Triton scored in the frame on a solo home run by Demi Queen (South Elgin), who later added an RBI single, a two-run single by Morrison, an RBI double by Molly Crowe (Columbus, Ind.), a two-run single by Tyanna Geiman (Zion-Benton) and an RBI single by Marie Chew (Taft).
Chew was 4-for-4 at the plate for Triton. The Trojans pounded out 17 hits including a first inning solo home run by Nanent Manieri (Waukegan) to open the scoring.
Pitcher Josalynn Claudio earned the win in relief for Triton, improving her record to 4-0. The sophomore from Luther North pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs.
