    Nuevos Horizontes Edward J. Layer Scholarship

    Edward Layer received the first Teacher of the Year award from the Adult Basic Education Department of Triton College in 1994 – at the age of 79. This was Layer’s second profession – he spent more than 50 years as a tailor, taking over his father’s business in Chicago at age 14. After receiving his associate’s degree from Triton College, he transferred to Elmhurst College and graduated summa cum laud at age 68. He was then hired by Triton as an instructor in the English as a Second Language program. Edward Layer was a favorite among his students, a tireless worker, a mentor to many and highly respected for his energy and diligence. After his death in 1998, the Nuevos Horizontes scholarship was renamed in his honor.

    Applicant must be of Hispanic origin AND reside within Triton College’s district (#504).
    Applicant must have been enrolled in Triton College’s GED, ESL, or Adult Basic Education program for a minimum of two semesters.
    Must demonstrate financial need.
    Must demonstrate continued community service.
    Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a college education. This can be done by seeing an academic advisor, counselor, touring the campus, and participating in career activities, demonstrating good attendance at classes and participating in Triton College’s ESL, GED or Adult Basic Education program activities.
    An instructor’s recommendations regarding personal leadership qualities of the student is also required as part of the application packet.
