Triton graduate Carmen Kosicek reveals secrets to success in the healthcare industry with first book

Carmen Kosicek isn’t one for keeping the secrets of success all to herself. The 1991 Triton College graduate and Ohio resident felt it pertinent to share her knowledge and experience in the healthcare field in her June 2012-released book Nurses, Jobs and Money – A Guide on Advancing Your Nursing Career and Salary. The book is filled with proven techniques and real-life case studies that show nurses how to plan their career for optimal income and success – something Kosicek has come to achieve both academically and professionally. Kosicek will release another book, Nurses, Jobs and Resumes-Resume Revisions for RNs From the New Grad RN to the Experienced RN in November 2014.

Academically, Kosicek has earned an A.A.S. in nuclear medicine from Triton; a bachelor’s in nursing from St. Joseph College of Nursing at the University of St. Francis in Joliet; and a master’s of science in nursing from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where she graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Kosicek also holds a postgraduate certificate as an Advanced Practice Nurse in nurse-midwifery from Frontier University in Hyden, Kentucky and a certificate from the Certified Medical Representative Institute in Richmond, Virginia.

Her healthcare career spans from clinical positions in nuclear medicine, labor and delivery, OB Nurse Manager and an Advanced Practice Nurse-Midwife. She has been a collegiate nursing adjunct professor for nursing programs for eight years, and has held the position of Director of Research and Development of Nursing and Health Professions Program for Corinthian Colleges.  She currently holds the position of Clinical Nurse Sales Educator Specialist with Johnson & Johnson.

What have been some obstacles you've had to overcome in pursuit of your educational and career goals?
I married at age 19. My husband and I both stayed local, funded our own education, worked, had children five years into our marriage and continued on to both obtain our master’s degrees.

What have been some sources of inspiration both in your career and in your life?
Financial and business gurus Robert Kiyosaki, Suze Orman and Dave Ramsey have all inspired me.

What would you describe as your strong suit?
I feel that I have the ability to take something complex and break it down for anyone at any educational level to understand. This is an important part of my job in education.

How has Triton College impacted your life?
Triton created a strong healthcare base rich in pathophysiology for me.

What Advice would you give to someone who would like to pursue a career in your field?
Think outside the box; there truly are no limits as a nurse.

What are your words of wisdom for current Triton students?
Your future is so bright. You need to think big, really big and then go for it!

What are your plans for the future?
I would like to focus on nurse speaking engagements nationally to reach and inspire nurses across America.
