    2013 Triton College Tapestry Workshop - Presenters


    Don Yanek
    Don Yanek
      Don Yanek is the chair of the Computer Science Department at Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago, IL. Don has been a high school teacher for twenty four years teaching math, physics, and computer science. Don is an active member of the Computer Science education community in Chicago. He is a founding member of the Chicago Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and president for the last four years. He is a member of the CSTA Leadership Cohort representing Illinois. Don is currently a Co-Principal Investigator on the National Science Foundation Computing Education in the 21 Century grant, Taste of Computing. The goal of the project is to improve and expand computer science education at the high school level for all students throughout the Chicago Public Schools. In 2011, he won the Chicago Public Schools' Exemplary Teacher Award for Computer Science Education. In 2013, he received the IL NCWIT Aspirations in Computing, Teacher Award.

    Bill Waas
    Bill Waas
      William R. Waas is the Chairman & CEO of the Illinois Technology Foundation (ITF). The ITF is a not for profit organization that focuses on keeping graduating students in Illinois and working with k-12 students encouraging them to pursue a career in technology. Mr. Waas was Vice President of Value Added Services at Dell Computer Corporation. He is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University and the Morris Graduate School of Management and is a member of both school’s Curriculum Advisory Councils. He is also active in the community as chairman of the advisory board for the Children’s Hospital at the University of Illinois and a member of the board for the Chicago Chapter of AITP. Mr. Waas holds a BBA in accounting and an MBA in finance from Hofstra University.

    Laura Reasoner Jones
    Laura Reasoner Jones
      Laura Reasoner Jones is a National Board Certified Teacher, and the founder of the GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) clubs, which have more than 40 chapters across the United States. A Technology Specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools, she has worked since 1994 to encourage young girls to pursue math and science courses and careers. As Teacher in Residence for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, she created the DIgital Edge Learning Interchange, an extensive video library of accomplished teaching with technology. She currently teaches elementary teachers and students robotics, video production and computer programming.

    Angela Spyropoulos
    Angela Spyropoulos
      Angela Spyropoulos is the program director and coordinator of the Women in Technology Mentoring Program at Moraine Valley Community College. Angela is an Autodesk Certified Professional in 3DS Max Design who teaches 3D Animation, Design Visualization, Digital Video Editing, Computer Graphics as well as Web Design. She currently teaches at four schools, including two colleges, and a grammar school where she teaches computer technology to over 200 students from Pre-K to 8th grade. Angela recently worked together with CORD on a project in Gender Equity in Emerging Technologies, which was funded by the National Science Foundation. As Subject Matter Expert (SME), she assisted in developing a manual and an on-line website that enables other high schools and colleges to create a successful "Women in Technology Mentoring Program".

    Antigone Sharris
    Antigone Sharris
      Antigone Sharris is Professor and Chair of the Department of Engineering Technology at Triton College. Her interests range from increase minority enrollment and completion in the Engineering Technology field, mentoring high school FIRST robotics teams, and running STEM youth programming. She has developed and runs summer camps in WaterBotics (a Steven's Institute based program) and GADgET (Girls Adventuring in Design, Engineering & Technology). When she worked in the field, she dealt primarily with custom/non-standard products for the stainless steel and heat transfer industries. Antigone sees learning as a "pull" process, starting with the problem, thereby promoting the learning process by pulling in the information and resources vs. pushing information on the students that they "one day" may need.

    Robert Luciano
    Robert "Bob" Luciano
      Robert "Bob" Luciano has been a math and computer science teacher in the Pocono Mountain School District for 24 years. He began teaching all of the computer science classes in 1995. No students at Pocono Mountain had ever earned a passing score on the AP Computer Science exam before 1995. In the last 17 years more than 100 students have earned passing scores on the AP Computer Science exam. On the 2012 AP Computer Science exam 14 students earned passing scores. A main theme of Robert's teaching philosophy is the use of cooperative logic groups to teach students problem solving strategies. He has been a presenter at 9 Tapestry workshops and his sessions are always rated highly by the workshop participants.

    Seth Reichelson - Seth Reichelson currently teaches 144 students in AP CS with 45% female enrollment. Next year’s enrollment is at 296 students.

    Jim Cohoon
    Jim Cohoon
      Jim Cohoon is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Virginia. His research interests include application areas such as VLSI design automation, transport scheduling and routing, and Computer Science education. His interdisciplinary approach applies and extends nontraditional techniques such as computational geometry, probabilistic search, genetics, and parallel computing. He is a Co-PI on the NSF grant providing the primary funding for this workshop.

    Joane Cohoon
    Joane McGrath Cohoon
      Joanne McGrath Cohoon is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT), and Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at the University of Virginia. Cohoon conducts nationwide empirical studies of gender and computing. Her results are reported in scholarly journals and an award-winning book, co-edited with William Aspray -- Women and Information Technology, Research on Underrepresentation. Cohoon's work at NCWIT involves conducting, translating, applying, disseminating, and evaluating research. She also serves on the CRA-W Board, offers professional development to computing high school teachers, trains and supervises consultants, and collaborates on increasing women's participation in volunteer computing.

    Luther Tychonievich
    Luther Tychonievich
      Luther Tychonievich is a graduate student in the Computer Science Department at the University of Virginia, where he designs algorithms and writes proofs about how swarms of agents can perform in the presence of limited knowledge and malicious agents. He earned M.S. and B.S. degrees in computer science from Brigham Young University and A.A. and A.S. degrees from Lakeland Community College. Luther loves teaching and has published papers on educational issues including diversity and outreach in computer science education, pedagogy design, and the presentation of computational material to lay audiences.

    Khallai Taylor
      Khallai Taylor is the Tapestry Workshop organizer and a Professor in the Computer Information Systems department at Triton College. Her areas of interest include mobile application development and ubiquitous computing. She is passionate about exposing women and under-represented minorities to the art of programming through creative and unique approaches to teaching. Such as the use of visual programming and social media. Khallai is a member of the Illinois NCWIT planning committee for the Illinois NCWIT Aspirations Awards that recognizes female high school students who aspire to go into a STEM field.
