UC Student of the Month Archive - Francis Segura

    Francis Segura

My name is Francis Segura and I am a current student in the Bachelors of Social Work program through Governors State University at Triton College. My interest in Social Work began when I took an Introduction to Social Work class at Triton College in 2011. The teacher was empowering and exposed me to the overall concept of the profession and guided me in choosing Social Work. I graduated from Triton College in May of 2013 with an Associate’s Degree in Arts.

That Spring I met with Julie Anderson at Triton through the University Center to talk about transferring to Governors State University and she provided all the information I needed regarding the classes offered at the Triton Campus and the process of applying which was very simple. Later that spring I met with Dr. West as she became my advisor and from the start she was very helpful and provided my study plan that listed in order the classes I needed to obtain my Bachelor's degree in Social Work. I did not have to travel to the GSU campus for anything everything was done at the Triton campus. I was relieved I did not have to travel to the GSU campus because I had a busy schedule with working and having my daughter. I started in the fall semester of 2013 as a GSU student at the Triton Campus and from the beginning I loved the class size because I feel I learn best in a small group because the teacher can connect with each student better. I took 2 classes in the fall and spring and I was surprised of how much I had enjoyed the experience of learning about Social Work. Before each semester began, I met with my advisor Dr. West to go over my study plan and make sure I was taking the appropriate classes. I love that the professors have a lot of experience in the field because that helps to engage the class and give us a taste of what it's like to work in the field. I just finished my second year at GSU at the Triton Campus and I am looking forward to my internship in the fall 2015. I am on schedule to graduate next spring of 2016.

I am very happy with my experience so far at GSU. The class sizes are perfect and the class schedules are convenient. The professors truly care about us learning the material and making sure we are on schedule to graduate on time. I made the right choice to come first to Triton College which gave me the opportunity through the University Center to attend Governors State University at the Triton College campus. I can say it has been a smooth transition from college to university thanks to the preparation Triton gave me before attending the university.
