UC Student of the Month Archive - Alicia Compton

    Alicia Compton

Hi, my name is Alicia Compton. I’m currently a full-time student at Governors State University (GSU), taking classes at an off-campus site in River Grove. I plan to graduate with my Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice degree in 2016. Governors State University is one of the best universities around, and I couldn’t have chosen a better school to attend.

I graduated from Triton College in May of 2012 with an Associate in Arts Degree. After graduating, I took a break from school to work a full-time job. I wasn’t sure how to fit school into my busy schedule. It was brought to my attention that GSU has an off campus location in River Grove on the Triton College campus, which is not too far from where I live. I thought the opportunity would be great for me to further my education and get my bachelor’s degree. I first contacted Nancy Kaczmarczyk, the External Programs Manager of the College of Arts and Sciences at GSU to talk about transferring to GSU. Nancy gave me the contact information for Christina Sintic, the Undergraduate Program Coordinator and Senior University Lecturer of the criminal justice program at GSU. Christina walked me through the process of becoming a student at GSU. The process was very easy. Christina became my academic advisor and helped me set up a study plan, and within just a few weeks I was registered for classes. Everything is going as planned and I will be graduating as scheduled in May of 2016.

I am very happy with my experience at GSU. I have enjoyed and learned so much from all of my instructors. The location of my classes has been very convenient, with my being able to take them on the Triton College campus and online, rather than driving to the main campus in University Park. The class sizes are small and never overcrowded, and that has made it a very pleasant learning experience for me. I must say it has been a very smooth transition from community college to this university - thanks to the help of my academic advisors, professors, and GSU staff members. With their help I have stayed on my scheduled track to graduate and am looking forward to my final semester which includes my field internship experience.
