    Sustainability Month Activities - April 2011

    The Greening the Campus Committee is sponsoring a variety of activities throughout the month of April in promotion of increased awareness regarding sustainability. These activities include:

    • Greening Your Office 
      April 6, 10 - 11 AM in E-204
      Attend this session in Triton's Professional Development Center to learn what steps you can take to 'green' your office.

    • Root Riot Presentation on Community Gardens
      April 13, 7 - 8 PM in B-210
      Come learn about the growing popularity and recognition of the importance of community gardening in urban environments. Root Riot, a local organization focused on "food consciousness", will describe the process of developing a community garden and tips to help ensure a successful outcome. They are an open organization dedicated to creating opportunities for people to learn and discover the joys of growing their own food. In 2010, Root-Riot Harambee received Mayor Daley's and the City of Chicago Green Works Award and Root-Riot Madison was recognized with a Green Award by the Environment and Energy Commission of The Village of Oak Park. 

    • Greenhouse and Botanical Garden Tours
      April 16, 11 AM - 2 PM
      Come tour Triton College's greenhouse and botanical garden and take a plant home for free!

    • Teaching Sustainability Across the Curriculum
      April 21, 1 - 2 PM in E-210
      Have you discussed sustainability in the classroom? Is it a regular part of your curriculum? Have you thought about it but aren't sure it's relevant to your discipline? Please come and share your experiences and ideas and help brainstorm new approaches. Discussion will address some big "green" questions and will consider methodologies that can be used for class assignments. The goal is for participants to leave the workshop with both inspiration and practical ideas. Facilitator Adrian Fisher is a long-time adjunct instructor in the English Department, and a member of the Triton Green Committee.

    • College Hour on Greening Your Office and Home
      April 26, 2 - 3 PM in B-223
      Learn more about what steps you can take to make your office and home more green, and discuss what steps Triton College can take in helping to make this happen.

    • The Economics of Happiness Film Screening
      April 28, 7 PM in R-221
      The Economics of Happiness is about the worldwide movement for economic localization. Featuring a chorus of voices from six continents, including Vandana Shiva, Khyentse Norbu Rinpoche, Bill McKibben, Pracha Hutanuwatr, David Korten, Rodrigo Lopes, Michael Shuman, Samdhong Rinpoche, Rob Hopkins, Mohau Pheko, Keibo Oiwa, and Juliet Schor. A discussion will follow after the screening.

       

    Planting Triton's Prairie Garden
    Students in BIS 105 planted native prairie seeds outside of Triton's west greenhouse in December. These seeds will stay dormant throughout the winter and begin growing in the spring.
