2010 Members' "Big Event" You will be cordially invited to our 26th annual "Big Event" for members, The Mercury 13: The Forgotten Women of America's Space Program Dr. Margaret A. Weitekamp on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at Triton College Performing Arts Center 2000 N. Fifth Avenue, River Grove, IL (on the east side of Fifth Ave.) The Cernan Earth and Space Center's next "Big Event" will be held on the evening of Saturday, August 14, 2010. Twenty years before the first women were allowed into NASA's astronaut program, there were thirteen others who tried. These "Mercury 13" women (as they would later be known) were put through the same rigorous tests that the seven Mercury astronauts had been subjected to as part of a privately funded research project. Having already proven themselves as accomplished pilots, all thirteen women completed Phase I testing, three of the women also completed Phase II testing, and one (Geraldyn "Jerrie" Cobb) also completed the final Phase III testing. However, these "Mercury 13" were not part of NASA’s astronaut program and never flew in space. Nonetheless, these thirteen women proved not only that they were as tough as any man, but also that they were brave enough to challenge the prejudice, jealousy, and sexism that prevented them from ever being considered for the astronaut program. This very special event is offered only to Friends of the Cernan Center members and their immediate families. Memberships start at $40 a year.
