Architectural Transfer to the University of Illinois at Chicago (Updated November 27, 2005)

The transfer program listed below will enable a student at Triton College to apply for admission as a transfer student to the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago to complete a B.A. in Architectural Studies. It is not necessary to receive a degree at Triton College in order to be eligible to transfer.  Students can take all of these courses at Triton College to allow them to transfer smoothly without loss of credit or time in school.

Special information for transfer to UIC:

Because UIC requires an Architectural Analysis and an Architectural Theory course in the sophomore year, which the Triton architecture program does not offer, you may be required to take those courses at UIC prior to allowing you into their Junior year design course, thereby requiring additional time to graduate.

Click here to view the 4-year UIC Curriculum

Portfolio review is required for placement.

A minimum of 36 credit hours must have been earned prior to transfer.

A maximum of 60 credit hours may be transferred.

UIC School of Architecture only admits transfer students in the fall semester.

Completing the Triton Associate of Arts Degree in Architecture will also make a student eligible to transfer to UIC.

The minimum transfer grade point average for admission to the School of Architecture is a  2.75 for all transferable work attempted.

UIC will determine where you will place in their program based on a combination of portfolio review and a review of your grades in the curriculum and courses you have completed at Triton.

To help assure acceptance into UIC's architectural studies program, apply for admission early - as early as October 1 in the year preceding the year you want to enter UIC. The earlier you apply, the better chance you will have to be accepted. You must have completed 36 credit hours when you apply for enrollment. To allow you to apply by October 1, you may need to enroll in one or two classes during the summer after your Freshman year at Triton. Otherwise, you will have to wait until the grades are posted for the fall semester of your Sophomore year, which is late December. That will be ok, too, but don't wait much longer than after January 1 to apply, or they may have already filled up their quota for the year.

It is also recommended by UIC that you submit all required information at the same time - transcripts, portfolio, and a highly-recommended essay, telling them why you want to study architecture at UIC. The essay is optional, but will enhance your chances of being admitted. No one is ever turned down for a bad essay, but your essay may be the very thing which will help you get in, because the admission committee may be captivated by it. Every student gets reviewed individually by UIC. Also, don't forget to ask your Triton instructors to submit a letter of recommendation for you. For confidentially reasons, letters of recommendation are sent directly to the undergraduate program director, Mr. Javier Vendrell, from your instructor. Please do not feel shy about asking your instructor to write a letter on your behalf. We are on your side!
