Men’s and women’s track and field returns to Triton athletic lineup
The Triton College Athletics Department is proud to announce the re-launch of its intercollegiate men's and women's track and field to begin competition in the spring of 2014. The program makes its return after a 20-year absence.
"We're very excited about bringing track and field back," said Triton College Athletic Director Harry McGinnis. "For us to add sports in a time when many institutions are removing them, shows Triton's commitment to athletics. We hope the addition of track and field will bring more student-athletes, especially ones within our district, to campus so we can have a team ready to compete next spring."
Triton competed in men's track and field from 1969-94 and in women's track and field from 1979-94. Of the athletic programs, Triton boasts 215 total All-Americans - seven were from track and field, including four individuals selected in 1980 alone.
Currently, McGinnis is searching for a head coach for the program, as Triton is just one of three two-year schools in Region IV that will have track and field. Even though Triton does not have an outdoor track on campus, the teams will use the existing facilities at Triton for practices along with partnering with the Village of Melrose Park to use their track when needed. The teams will travel to all meets scheduled.
The addition of men's and women's track and field makes them the ninth and 10th intercollegiate sports offerings, respectively, at Triton and adds to a diverse lineup of sports that includes baseball, basketball, soccer and wrestling for the men; and basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball for the women.
