Triton wrestlers qualify for Nationals

The Triton College wrestling team will be sending three wrestlers to nationals after a fourth-place team finish at the Central District Tournament held Feb. 16 at the Robert M. Collins Center gymnasium in River Grove.

Jameel Carter (Uplift) at 133, Darius Henry (Oak Park-River Forest) at 149 and John Marino (York) at 165 each earned spots in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championships that will go on from Feb.27-Mar. 1 in Spokane, Wash., with third-place finishes in each of their respective weight classes.

Triton, as a team, placed fourth in the Central District with 29.5 points. Lincoln College (99.5 points) took the team title, with Muskegon Community College (95.5 points) taking second and Harper College (83.5 points) was third.

Carter, a sophomore transfer from Wright after their program was discontinued, will make his second trip to nationals. The 11th ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 lost a difficult 6-3 decision to the eventual champion Kerin Ramirez of Harper. Carter bounced back strong in the third place match, winning by major decision (16-2) over Felipe Rodriguez over Waubonsee.

At 149, Henry, a freshman, lost to Tyler Stenberg of Muskegon by an 11-6 decision in the semifinals before winning by fall over Graham Lough of Lincoln to finish third.

Marino, a sophomore from Elmhurst, will make consecutive national tournament appearances at 165 for the Trojans. In the semifinals, Marino lost to the eventual district champion David Frasier of Lincoln College by a 7-2 over-time decision. But Marino, in similar fashion to his teammate, won the third place bout, edging Harper's Mike Lurz by a 7-2 decision.

"This was a much tougher tournament with the loss of three programs from last year," said head coach Harry McGinnis. "The team knew going in they would need their best performance in order to qualify this year, and that is what these three did. I am very proud of them!"
