STEM in sports are workshops presented by Triton College for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade students.

Boys and girls can learn about science, technology, engineering, and math while participating in sports. The Engineering and Health, Sport, & Exercise Science departments have partnered to present an opportunity for youth to enroll in engaging workshops to learn about important STEM topics that occur within some of their favorite sports. Workshops are hosted by Triton College faculty, with the assistance of Triton students and will be offered each semester.

GADgET (Girls Adventuring in Design, Engineering and Technology) is a summer program funded by a grant from the Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation of FMA (Fabricator Manufactures Association) designed to introduce female youth between the ages of 12 and 16 to the world of manufacturing through hands-on projects and site visits to manufacturing facilities. CAD, entrepreneurship skills, academic requirements for 21st century manufacturing careers, as well as teamwork skills are covered.

Overall Learning Goals:
To create an interactive, problem-solving environment where students can learn and share opportunities in the field of manufacturing. Through this experience we intend to provide youth with the necessary knowledge needed to develop and achieve their dreams through the world of manufacturing, including what it takes to start and run their own enterprise.

Triton College congratulates Proviso Math and Science Academy on its second-place finish in Chicago robotics competition

Triton College commends the hard work and creative thinking of Proviso Math and Science Academy’s Monty Pythons Robotics Team for being named a regional finalist in the 2012 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, Robotics Midwest Regional Competition in March at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

More than 50 participating teams competed in groups of three and were faced with the task of building a robot that shoots basketballs through a hoop. Triton’s own Engineering Technology instructor Antigone Sharris served as an expert source to the Monty Pythons (Team 2151) of Forest Park in constructing their complex robot that placed second in the Midwest Regional in collaboration with WildStang Team 111 of Schaumburg and Hammond Team 71 of Hammond, Ind.

Sharris, an engineer, volunteers each year to mentor the Monty Pythons in designing, building and programming their robots. “The team was smart in their design and execution of the project this year that successfully placed them as a finalist in a tough competition,” she said. “Each member of this team has a promising future in an engineering technology career that I hope being part of this team has encouraged them to pursue following high school.”  

The Monty Pythons raised the funds to build their robot through donations from Triton College, JC Penney, Interlake Mecalux, mentor Branden Gunn, family and friends and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

On April 7, the team will show off their creation at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago for National Robotics Week.

A strong supporter of STEM-related activities, Triton College holds two youth camps during the summer with a STEM focus: WaterBotics Camp and GADgET Camp.
