Yanna Marie Samillano Flor

Triton College student Yanna Marie Flor credits the Transfer Center with helping her feel confident that her “reach schools” were possible.
Flor is currently awaiting decisions from two “dream universities”—Georgetown University and Northwestern University. She also applied to two “safe schools.” With the many resources and guidance, she received from the Transfer Center, Flors is excited and hopeful about the possibilities ahead.
Flor is grateful the support she received, from identifying universities in her field of study to navigating financial aid and tackling the application process.
“The Transfer Center gave me so many options,” she said. “I didn’t feel so overwhelmed.”
As a member of the Scholars Program, Flor appreciated the Transfer Center ongoing communication and support. Conveniently located in Triton College’s B Building, the Transfer Center made it easy for Flor to meet with representatives often.
“Everyone in the Transfer Center is so friendly,” she said. “They would always check in with me and ask me about my transferring journey.”
Flor noted that transferring can be challenging, especially compared to the simpler application process she experienced in high school.
“Ian Torres [the Transfer Center’s support specialist] has lists of universities specific to my field, which is school counseling,” she explained. “He helped me understand the universities that offered interaction-based psychology and master’s degree programs.”
On campus, Flor is involved in many activities, such as Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Student Life, Model United Nations (UN), and is the founder of the Asian Culture Club and Psychology Club. The Transfer Center helped her highlight leadership roles, high GPA, clubs and activities in her scholarship and university applications.
“I didn’t know what to emphasize when applying to schools,” she said. “I really wanted all of my accomplishments to stand out.”
Flor will graduate from Triton College this spring and is excited to walk across the stage, knowing that all her hard work has brought her to this moment.
“Commencement is a great way to celebrate and showcase everything I’ve done and accomplished,” she said.
