Triton College Unveils New Barber and Cosmetology Facility, Hosts Orientation Event

RIVER GROVE, Ill. — Triton College’s Barber and Cosmetology Program will host a combined Information Session, Orientation, and Registration event on Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the program’s brand-new learning facility.
Sessions will be held at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. inside the new lab in Room M-150 (M Building). Meet the faculty, explore Triton’s state-of-the-art facility, and learn how you can be part of this exciting and growing field.
Construction on the new space for barber and cosmetology students wrapped up this summer. It features 20 salon and barber stations, a wash house for shampooing hair, space for manicures and pedicures, a skincare room, and areas for classroom instruction and lectures.
“It’s the real deal,” said Donita Mitchell, cosmetology faculty member, adding that stepping into the new facility is like walking into a sophisticated salon or barbershop. Upon entry, guests will be welcomed by an inviting reception area. Hard to miss are the lustrous white floors, the sleek black leather salon chairs that sit on swivels, and the polished wooden styling stations.
“Seeing the facility come together from the diagrams on paper—seeing it come to life—is just amazing to witness,” Mitchell said.
Whether you’re looking to launch a new career, develop beauty and grooming skills, or start your own business, Triton College’s Cosmetology and Barber programs provide the training and industry connections to help students succeed in this exciting and dynamic field.
Just like in a real salon, Mitchell added, community members will be able to book appointments for a wide assortment of services.
Students’ education won’t be confined to textbooks—they’ll also work with kits, clippers, and trimmers. Additionally, students will learn about human anatomy and the nervous system, with a focus on the head, hands, and feet.
“The Cosmetology and Barber Program offers students hands-on job training and equips them with skills they’ll be able to take into the workforce,” Mitchell said. “They’ll be cutting hair and working with real clients. By gaining that exposure and hands-on experience, they’ll be much more prepared when they work in a salon, a barbershop, or when they start their own business.”
The Barber and Cosmetology Certificates each require 50 credit hours, equivalent to the 1,500 clock hours mandated by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Once students complete their respective certificates, they will be eligible to pursue state licensure.
Many beauty professionals own their own businesses, set their own schedules, and build their personal brands. At Triton, students will train in a modern salon environment and work with real clients—all in a cost-effective, structured program designed to get you licensed and career-ready.

Have questions? Come to orientation! Barber faculty and students will also be giving free back to school haircuts at Re’Lux Hair Studio in Maywood on Aug. 17, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Pick up a pair of trimmers and start shaping your future, one cut at a time.
