Triton College Students Selected for Prestigious Fermilab Internship
RIVER GROVE, Ill. – Triton College students Nathan Campos and Carroll Creedon have been selected for one of the most competitive research opportunities in the country—the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Community College Internships (CCI) program. This summer, the students will gain hands-on technical experience at Fermilab, paving the way for exciting careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).
Campos, of Franklin Park, recently earned his associate degree from Triton and saw the internship as a way to strengthen his resume and gain real-world experience in electrical engineering. He’s especially looking forward to working with particle accelerators and apply programs like Python and Linux.
Creedon, of Brookfield, is studying mechanical engineering at Triton and believes the internship will best prepare him for a career in engineering.
“I’ve never been inside an engineering lab,” noted Creedon. “I’m excited to network with others in this field.”
Both Campos and Creedon will participate in the internship from June through August 2025. Campos plans to continue his studies at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), while Creedon has a few more classes at Triton before also transferring to UIC.
“I (chose) Triton because they offered so many courses in electricity,” said Campos. “I have learned about transformers, breakers, capacitors and more. I feel like I have gotten a head start because at most traditional universities, students do not get this kind of experience until their third year. It’s better to learn with your hands.”
“Triton is affordable and convenient,” added Creedon. “I’m making a lot of connections in the engineering field that will prepare me for the future.”
CCI is a paid internship sponsored and managed by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science’s Office, through its Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS). The opportunity places students at DOE laboratories and facilities across the country, offering them valuable exposure to research and innovation at a national level.
