Triton College Hosting Two New Innovative Youth Camps this Summer

RIVER GROVE, Ill. – Triton College is offering two new highly interactive summer camps designed to inspire and encourage young students to explore careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Camp SPARK and Tech-Style Camp aim to ignite curiosity and motivate the next generation of thinkers to pursue opportunities in the STEAM fields. Registration for both camps are now open.

Both camps are made possible by a special grant from SparkForce (formerly known as Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs), a charitable foundation of the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association.

“Students will obtain all of the acronym elements of STEAM in these camps,” said Antigone Sharris, Engineering Technology faculty member. “They’re going to learn to be creative in designing and beyond.”

Camp SPARK will take place June 23-26. Designed for ages 7-13, students will have the opportunity to harness the power of advanced fabrication tools. They will engage in hands-on building projects using a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) plasma cutter, learning how to design, cut and assemble their own creations. The camp will be taught by Sharris.

Tech-Style Camp will take place July 21-24. Designed for ages 13-16, students will explore the intersection of textiles, innovative technologies, and various industries to uncover potential career paths. They will blend textiles with X-Tool lasers technology to create custom design projects and interactive fabric art. The camp will be taught by Andrea Blaylock, chair of Engineering Technology.

Returning technology camps include:

  • Art in Engineering
  • GLoW: Girls Learning to Weld (MIG)
  • GLoW: Girls Learning to Weld (TIG)
  • GADgET
  • FuN Camp
  • CampBotics

Sharris created GADgET in 2010 to encourage more girls to explore engineering. Since then, the camp has been featured in The New York Times and adopted by other area schools.

“These summer camps give all students access to state-of-the-art technology, allowing them to be creative and have fun,” said Sharris.
