Triton College Introduces New Horticulture Courses for Lifelong Learners

RIVER GROVE, Ill. — Triton College’s School of Continuing Education is proud to introduce new horticulture courses, allowing lifelong learners to bring out their green thumbs and start planting the seeds for an exciting new passion.

New this fall, Continuing Education’s courses cover gardening, landscaping and plant care basics, giving community members an opportunity to develop gardening skills and lawn maintenance acumen through hands-on learning. Classes explore how horticulture enriches everyday lives, beautifies neighborhoods and community spaces, and supports a greener, more sustainable future for the planet.

Associate Dean of Continuing Education Katie Rullo emphasized that the courses are perfect for homeowners, gardening enthusiasts and anyone curious about plants.

“We’re excited to open up Triton’s horticulture spaces to the community and give people a chance to learn from experts while getting their hands in the soil,” she said. “Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, there’s something here for everyone to explore, learn and grow.”

Classes utilize the College’s farm, botanical gardens, greenhouses and other horticulture spaces, giving participants a hands-on opportunity to develop practical skills they can apply in their own gardens, landscapes and homes.

Horticulture instructor Natalie Pecaro said that Triton’s facilities provide a unique environment for gaining experience in gardening, farming and greenhouse growing, making it ideal for beginners and experienced growers alike.

This is the only program like it in the area. There is room for everyone of all ages, abilities and experience levels in these courses. Simply being outside and/or working with plants has countless benefits for mental and physical health.

Registration costs the same for all students regardless of residency, and courses include Fall Gardening and Harvest Techniques; Greenhouse Growing Fundamentals; Floral Design Basics: Create Stunning Arrangements; Vegetable Gardening; and Landscaping, Lawn Care and Fertilization 101. Each course comprises four two-hour sessions.

The new courses are just the beginning, according to Rullo, who said Continuing Education plans to expand its horticulture offerings with additional classes throughout the year.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to grow the program and offer new classes,” Rullo said. “We’ll have horticulture courses in the spring, summer and fall, with different themes and opportunities for people to learn throughout the year.”
