RIVER GROVE, Ill. — The Triton College women’s basketball team has made school history.
After Saturday’s 64-46 victory over Bryant & Stratton College in Milwaukee, the Trojans racked up their 16th consecutive win of the season, breaking the program record for the longest winning streak previously set by the 1982-83 women’s team.
“It’s a great accomplishment for us to break the school record,” head coach Drew Winston said. “But I’m thinking about how we played. We were not at our best today, and I want us to clean up some things in the final three games to get ready for the playoffs.”
The Trojans (19-8) have all but secured the top seed heading into the Region 4 Division I Tournament, which Triton will host beginning March 4. Triton is 13-0 against Region 4 Division I opponents.
The win in Milwaukee was a homecoming for sophomores Jazzmine Smith and Jayla Rankin, who played together about 10 minutes away at Wisconsin Lutheran High School.
Smith led the Trojans with 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Rankin continued her NJCAA All-American push with 11 points, nine assists and seven steals.
The Trojans’ defense forced 35 Bobcats turnovers, leading to 40 points. Triton finished with 28 steals. As a team, the Trojans rank third in the nation in steals, averaging just under 17 per game.
Triton will look to continue its record-setting streak when it returns to the Jorndt Athletic Complex for its final home game of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 19, against Malcolm X College. Tipoff is 5 p.m.
