Basic Security and Firearms Safety & Training
Ready, Aim, Hire! Train to be a Security Professional
Security guards, also called security officers/safety officers, patrol and inspect property to protect against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism and illegal activity. They protect their employer's property, enforce laws on the property, deter criminal activity and other problems. These workers may be armed. They use various forms of telecommunications to call for assistance from police, fire or emergency medical services. Security guards write comprehensive reports outlining their observations and activities during their assigned shift. They also may interview witnesses or victims, prepare case reports and testify in court.
License and Certification
Illinois law require that guards be licensed. To be licensed as a guard, individuals must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check and complete classroom training in such subjects as property rights, emergency procedures and detention of suspected criminals. Drug testing often is required and may be ongoing and random. Guards who carry weapons must be licensed by the appropriate government authority and some receive further certification as special police officers, allowing them to make limited types of arrests while on duty. Armed guard positions also have more stringent background checks and entry requirements than those of unarmed guards.
According to the Bureau of Labor of Statistics (BLS), employment of security guards is projected to grow 5 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Overall job opportunities should be excellent, especially for security guards. Median annual wage for surveillance officers and gaming investigators was $32,630 in May 2016.
PSA E02 - Private Security Basic Training (1.5 AEC)
Course Description: This course meets the requirements of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation as outlined in the Detective Act. It covers security fundamentals for new officers and provides a review for experienced employees who want to earn state certification. This course, along with a Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), is needed for employees of private security agencies.
PSA E25 - Private Security Firearms Training (1.5 AEC)
Course Description: Armed officers in Illinois need 40 hours of instruction in order to be certified by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to carry a firearm in the line of duty. After completing a 20-hours basic course, students enroll in this 20-hour firearms class to become state certified. Two days of classroom instruction and a written examination are followed by another day on the live fire range for final qualification. NOTE: A current Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) is a prerequisite to receive firearms training at Triton College. Your FOID card must be presented to the firearms instructor at the beginning of the first day of class. Out-of-state students are exempt from this requirement.
Bookkeeping For Personal and Professional Development
This training program is designed for people who are interested in learning bookkeeping for both personal and professional development. This comprehensive series of courses will introduce you to basic computer technology and how to use those skills in the world of business. Classes are offered in a combination of classroom and online formats.

Business Professional Programs
Online management training and business skills programs can help you enter a new career field or advance your current skillset. Select programs even prepare you for industry-recognized certifications, such as Lean Six Sigma or PMP.
Green Technology Training - Online
Green jobs can be found in a number of areas in addition to online job boards. In some instances employers may not publicize a job opportunity via a traditional online job board for reasons such as time (for example, the company may not be able to invest the internal human resources needed to review a large number of applicants that could arise with a broad-based posting) or capacity (for example, a young company may not have a complete human resources department).
Some of the other sources and strategies to locate green jobs include:
1. Go Direct
Some companies may publish job listings on their website but not necessarily conduct additional external recruitment for candidates. To access these opportunities job seekers should identify companies they would be interested in working for and review the Jobs or Careers section of their website for potential jobs. Strategies to identify companies include:
- Reviewing membership lists or other resources from relevant industry associations. For example, the American Solar Energy Society provides this list of employers. A list of some industry associations is available on Green Collar Blog.
- Reviewing the list of exhibitors or presenters at industry conferences. For example, there were more than 400 organizations at this week's Intersolar conference.
- Reviewing relevant industry publications (for example, Sustainable Industries). These publications may contain news stories mentioning potential employers. Examining the companies who advertise in such publications may also be valuable.
- Reviewing national or local lists and directories of green businesses (such as the Bay Area Green Business Program and the National Green Pages).
Networking can enable job seekers to learn about job opportunities. There are a vast number of approaches and strategies for networking, including attending events by organizations such as EcoTuesday and GreenDrinks, participating in the local chapter of a national organization such as the American Solar Energy Society, or attending programs or conferences such as the Green Festival. There are also internet-based approaches to networking (see point #3). Due to the importance of networking to a successful job search it will be the focus of a future article on Green Collar Blog.
3. Online Social Media
There are an increasing number of job opportunities posted via online social media channels. For example, all groups on the professional networking site LinkedIn include a "Jobs" tab where job opportunities can be posted. Company representatives (including hiring managers) may use social media to conduct their own outreach for potential candidates. For example, the Green Jobs and Career Network group on LinkedIn currently contains more than 50 job postings in various locations.
4. E-mail Lists
There are a number of specialized e-mail lists that distribute job postings. A number of these list are free for job seekers to join, including EnviJobs, Green Job List and YNPN.
As with job boards, there are an increasing number of recruiters that focus on careers pertaining to sustainability. A number of these organizations will post positions for which they are currently seeking candidates (two examples are Common Good Careers and Bright Green Talent). 6. Membership Organizations
Industry associations and other membership-based organizations can offer job postings among their member services. For example, Net Impact, a national organization that focuses on harnessing the power of business for social good, has an extensive set of career services (including a job board and resume tips) as well as an annual career expo.
7. Academic Institutions
Academic institutions offer a range of job-related resources for their students and graduates. These include access to job listings and job fairs. For example, Stanford University will be holding an Energy & Environmental Career Fair in October and this page on Green Collar Blog lists recent green career fairs held by institutions including the University of Illinois and University of Minnesota. Academic institutions can also be a source of networking opportunities.

EMS E31 - Medicar Driver/Attendant Training
Course Description: This program prepares students to become certified medicar operators and attendants. Topics include proper loading and securing techniques, vehicle lift operation, legal documentation and compliance. An emphasis on patient care during transport including a general overview of disabilities, first aid review, escort priorities and special transport considerations will be included. At the conclusion of this course students will sit for the NEMT Driver/Attendant-Certification-D/A-01 examination.
The training program, offered through a partnership with Medicar Safety, is designed to target primary instructional areas of non-emergency transport requirements. Working from a text manual, participants will also experience visual reinforcement with actual training examples demonstrated through a step-by-step video presentation.

BUS E65 - Music Business Fundamentals & Strategic Management
Course Description: This program provides instruction for aspiring artists, business entrepreneurs, music producers, and promoters seeking to be successful in the music business. The curriculum investigates a variety of components of the music industry and explores different career options including self-employment and helps develop fundamental business skills. Topics include management, independent marketing and promotions, production, contracts and negotiating skills. Discussion, reading and class projects will be assigned.
I have already taken business classes. Why should I enroll in the Music Business Program?
The music industry is quite separate from business in general. Your previous classes will benefit you as you learn more specifically what skills are needed to fully develop yourself and put yourself in a better position for success.
I don't play an instrument but I love music and I am fascinated by the music business. Is this a good fit for me?
If you are fascinated already, imagine how inspired you will be after learning key strategies and tips on how to truly navigate within the industry. You may find a niche for yourself that you never considered before such as management or promotions.
Will I be guaranteed an internship and/or job placement upon completion?
There is no internship component for this course.

The Music Business Program will absolutely give you the information you need to become independent and therefore be a better representative of your own talents.
What materials are needed or used for class?
You will be given handouts and sample documents pertaining to the areas of study. No books need to be purchased.
I am more into production. How can this Music Business Program help me?
The initial Music Business Program will help you better perfect your presence as a producer in the market. Tips for setting up a home studio plus ideas on making brochures and defining rates are just part of what you will learn.
I am not sure what direction I want to take in the music industry. How will the Music Business Program help me find my career path?
The main objective of the Music Business Program is to offer you an understanding of the many different career choices you do have in the industry. The class is structured to help you find the best match for your talents and passions, and helps cultivate the skills that you need to pursue your current and/or new goals.
Is this Music Business Program graded?
No, as it is part of Continuing Education. However class projects will be assessed for certificate issuance.
What do I need to bring to class?
Be prepared to take a lot of notes. You will receive various handouts and you will need to keep them organized and have them with you during the term. Laptops are allowed if kept muted. Any materials that may help define yourself as an “entity” are welcome to be shared, i.e.: business cards, demos, marketing plans, business contracts, etc.
What if I know someone who might want to take the class?
The instructor allows for one-hour visits for anyone considering registering. Visits have to be scheduled by the instructor and designated start and end times will be strictly enforced.
About the Instructor
Jacquelyn Weiner-O’Shea (JWO) is currently President of One Way Music Inc., an indie hip hop label in Chicago as well as a music business consultant. She was with Music Industry Workshop as the lead instructor for their Music Business Program. In that position she was the primary instructor and assisted the owner with the development of the curriculum and materials. Jacqui has also been a guest instructor at Columbia College and was a contracted partner with the online industry service Neon Muse. She has spent over two decades involved with artist and show management within Entertainment Management Group’s Chicago office, which is family-owned. This mix of executive business savvy and industry networking allows her to maintain close relationships with many executives and personnel within the industry.
Paralegal Studies - Online
Our school in partnership with Midwest Paralegal Studies is offering a 12-month Paralegal certificate of completion.
Paralegal, lawyer’s assistant, legal technician—they are all interchangeable titles used to describe individuals who work with attorneys and other professionals in the field of law. It’s a challenging career for those interested in doing research, drafting and managing court documents, investigating facts and performing other important tasks in today’s legal profession.

What do Paralegals do?
Although lawyers assume ultimate responsibility for legal work, they often delegate many of their tasks to paralegals. In fact, paralegals—also called legal assistants—are continuing to assume new responsibilities in legal offices and perform many of the same tasks as lawyers. Nevertheless, they are explicitly prohibited from carrying out duties considered to be within the scope of practice of law, such as setting legal fees, giving legal advice, and presenting cases in court.
One of a paralegal's most important tasks is helping lawyers prepare for closings, hearings, trials, and corporate meetings. Paralegals might investigate the facts of cases and ensure that all relevant information is considered. They also identify appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles and other materials that are relevant to assigned cases. After they analyze and organize the information, paralegals may prepare written reports that attorneys use in determining how cases should be handled. If attorneys decide to file lawsuits on behalf of clients, paralegals may help prepare the legal arguments, draft pleadings and motions to be filed with the court, obtain affidavits and assist attorneys during trials. Paralegals also organize and track files of all important case documents and make them available and easily accessible to attorneys.
Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 28 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employers are trying to reduce costs and increase the availability and efficiency of legal services by hiring paralegals to perform tasks once done by lawyers. Paralegals are performing a wider variety of duties, making them more useful to businesses.
Demand for paralegals also is expected to grow as an expanding population increasingly requires legal services, especially in areas such as intellectual property, healthcare, international law, elder issues, criminal law and environmental law. The growth of prepaid legal plans also should contribute to the demand for legal services.
Private law firms will continue to be the largest employers of paralegals, but a growing array of other organizations, such as corporate legal departments, insurance companies, real-estate and title insurance firms, and banks also hire paralegals. Corporations in particular are expected to increase their in-house legal departments to cut costs. The wide range of tasks paralegals can perform has helped to increase their employment in small and medium-size establishments of all types.
Wages of paralegals and legal assistants vary greatly. Salaries depend on education, training, experience, the type and size of employer, and the geographic location of the job. In general, paralegals who work for large law firms or in large metropolitan areas earn more than those who work for smaller firms or in less populated regions. In May 2008, full-time wage-and-salary paralegals and legal assistants earned $46,120. The middle 50 percent earned between $36,080 and $59,310. The top 10 percent earned more than $73,450, and the bottom 10 percent earned less than $29,260. In addition to earning a salary, many paralegals receive bonuses, in part to compensate them for sometimes having to work long hours. Paralegals also receive vacation, paid sick leave, a savings plan, life insurance, personal paid time off, dental insurance and reimbursement for continuing legal education.
Polish Language Interpretation
Are you fluent in Polish and English? Receptionist/Office Assistant (Bilingual - English/Spanish)
This certificate program prepares students with the office and computer skills needed to enter the business workplace while they are obtaining English language skills. Classes are taught primarily in Spanish with English terms. The objective of this bilingual program is to offer individuals the opportunity to obtain the knowledge and skills needed to explore the fast-growing world of the computer technology while using their native language.

Course Description: For older adults who want to understand and make use of computers. All students will be given hands-on instruction in basic operation and will utilize the Windows Operating System. This style appears to be the style of computing for the future and for many students is easier to learn than other types of computer interface.
DPR C20 - Basic Computer Skills & Keyboarding
Course Description: Become familiarized with basic computer skills and keyboard functions to improve your typing abilities. Learn basic keystrokes, computer keyboarding concepts and terminology for a more successful computer usage. Primary emphasis is placed on developing stroking speed and efficiency.

Course Description: Instruction in the application of the many features of Microsoft Windows including file and print manager, control panel, internet, mail and news programs, and data transfer between applications.
CIS E70 - Intro to MS Word I
Course Description: Introduction to Microsoft Word with instruction in the creation, formatting, and editing of various word processing documents. Keyboarding ability of 20 words per minute recommended.
CIS E71 - Word II
Course Description: Students will learn more advanced MS Word usage with a focus on customizing work by using menus and toolbars. Further template usage will be covered, as well as macros and practices to manage multiple documents. Additional focus will be placed on graphics, web pages, mail-merges and sharing information between other MS Office products.
CIS E06 Introduction to Microsoft Excel
Course Description: An introductory course in the world of electronic spreadsheets. Learn the fundamental concepts of developing an electronic spreadsheet and the uses of them in today's business community. Basic spreadsheet functions and commands are covered.
OFT E80 - Office Procedures (Optional)
Course Description: Develop proficiency in transitioning to the workplace and expand professional skills while working with customers. Learn how to organize and file documents while discovering the general nature of office work and behaviors desired for office professionals. Principles of customer orientation and concepts of business ethics will be discussed to improve the quality of service within an organization.
CIS E11 - Internet Essential Skills
Course Description: This class is designed to give you all the basics on how to "survive" on the internet. We'll introduce you to email, how to do it, why you want it, etc. We'll also introduce you to the World Wide Web. You'll learn to use Netscape to locate and view web sites. Other topics will be addressed.
BSN E02 - Customer Service & Office Equipment
Course Description: Introduction to learning basic skills and knowledge to be successful when dealing with the public in a business setting. Telephone skills, message taking and general office skills will also be covered along with the proper usage of general office equipment.
Social Media is everywhere! This certificate is designed to provide entrepreneurs, business owners, promoters and organizations with a foundation in the new, evolving world of social media. The Social Media certificate program will provide helpful strategies to immediately apply in the workplace and teach participants how to effectively utilize the growing opportunities available through social media marketing.
You will receive a broad overview of applications such as Google Applications, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, LinkedIn and YouTube as professional media tools.
The Social Media Certificate is a 60 hour program that consist of four 15 hour courses.

SOC E51 - Introduction to Social Media Marketing
Course Description: Provides instruction for entrepreneurs, business owners, promoters and organizations seeking to utilize the growing opportunities available through social media marketing. Course Description: : Explore ways to make it easy for online users to instantly connect with a business or organization while strengthening the relationships between the two. Learn how to maintain a strong online presence while capturing positive feedback from users from review sites like Yelp and Google. Course Description: Looking to increase brand awareness through online advertising while using Social Media? SOC E54 - Social Media: Management
Course Description: Take a deeper look at the opportunities and challenges when managing an online presence with social media, including best practices, creative marketing techniques, and day-to-day activities. Stay consistent with online messaging using expert tools for easy management of multiple accounts. An understanding of the Internet, email and Facebook accounts are required. Completion of SOC E51 is recommended.

Spanish Language Interpretation
The need for Spanish language interpreters is expected to continue to experience growth for the foreseeable future. To meet this growing need Triton College's School of Continuing Education is now offering a Certificate in Spanish Language Interpretation.
IMPORTANT! Students must be completely fluent in BOTH English & AND Spanish to register for this program.
The certificate covers three major categories in four semesters.
The certificate program is open entry and may be started with any course in the sequence except SOC E22 (Medical Settings II) which requires completion of SOC E21 (Medical Settings I) as a prerequisite.
The certificate requires the completion of four classes:
- SOC E18 - Spanish Interpreter Training - Legal Settings
- SOC E19 - Spanish Interpreter Training - School Settings
- SOC E20 - Spanish Interpreter Training - Medical Settings I
- SOC E21 - Spanish Interpreter Training - Medical Settings II (Medical Spanish I is a prerequisite)
We are an approved educational provider through the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA). Students must contact the IMIA for educational requirements and criteria.

Course Description: Individuals pursuing the volunteer administration credentialing are expected to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to apply skills required for competent volunteer management. HME E30 - Waterworks Operation Volume I (Covers C and D test)
Course Description: Operators will learn how to safely operate and maintain coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection processes, control tastes and odors in drinking water, control corrosion to meet the requirements of the Lead and Copper Rule, perform basic water laboratory procedures, and solve arithmetic problems commonly associated with water treatment plant operations. Overall plant operations topics, such as daily operating procedures, regulation of flows, chemical use and handling, records and reports, plant maintenance, safety, and security, emergency conditions and procedures, handling complaints, and energy conservation. Volume I meets criteria for granting six months of equivalent credit, as outlined in Section 15 of the Operator Certification Law or 45 hours of renewal training credit if taken as a review.
HME E31- Waterworks Operation Volume II (Covers A and B test)
Course Description: Operators will learn the practical aspects of operating and maintaining water treatment plants and emphasizing safe practices and procedures. Information will also be presented on the importance and responsibilities of a water treatment plant operator, sources of water, reservoir management, and intake structures. Operators will learn how to safely operate and maintain coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection processes. They will also learn to control tastes and odors in drinking water, control corrosion to meet the requirements of the Lead and Copper Rule, perform basic water laboratory procedures, and solve arithmetic problems commonly associated with water treatment plant operations. An important segment of the course provides operators information on overall plant operation and covers topics such as daily operating procedures, regulation of flows, chemical use and handling, records and reports, plant maintenance, safety and security, emergency conditions and procedures, handling complaints, and energy conservation.
Job Outlook/Salary Expectation
The outlook for Event & Wedding Planners is excellent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, employment of Wedding Planners is projected to increase by 20 percent between 2009 and 2016, a rate faster than the national average for all professions.

This is a course designed for students looking to get started in the glamorous and exciting event and wedding industry. This class covers everything an event and wedding planner needs to know, including contracts, etiquette, flowers, music, day of services, marketing, industry business practices and application.
