Triton College Hazing Policy

Triton College is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environment for all members of our campus community. Hazing undermines our values of respect, integrity, and community and is strictly prohibited under both College policy and Illinois law.

This policy is established under Triton College’s Campus Crime and Security Policy 3519 and reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of all students, employees, and campus participants.

Hazing causes physical, emotional, and psychological harm. It can humiliate, endanger, and create a toxic environment that disrupts learning and belonging. Triton College does not tolerate hazing by any individual or group, whether on or off campus.
Definition of Hazing

Hazing is any intentional, knowing, or reckless act—on or off campus—committed by one person or a group against another, when the act:

  • Endangers the physical health, safety, or emotional well-being of another person; and
  • Is connected to joining, pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization, team, or group—regardless of consent

Examples of hazing include (but are not limited to):

  • Physical acts such as beating, striking or applying harmful substances
  • Sleep deprivation, confinement, exposure to the elements or extreme physical activity
  • Coercing consumption of food, alcohol, drugs, or other substances
  • Forcing participation in sexual acts
  • Threatening or intimidating another person
  • Requiring acts that violate local, state, tribal, or federal law

Hazing does not include customary physical activity associated with approved athletic, educational, or training programs.

Illinois State Hazing Law (§720 ILCS 5/12C-50)
A person commits hazing when they knowingly require a student or other individual to perform any act for the purpose of induction or admission into any group or organization, if the act is not sanctioned by the institution and results in bodily harm.
Hazing is a criminal offense in the State of Illinois.
