Triton College’s Visual, Performing and Communication Arts Department has not only assisted student Catherine Hunt express herself creatively, but has also set her on a path towards a future career. With plans to transfer to a university to earn her bachelor’s degree, Hunt feels that enrolling at Triton has shaped and supported her goals.

“Due to the pandemic, I was stuck at home in a bubble for many, many years,” she explained. “Triton’s Art Club has given me the chance to become somebody outside of parenthood.”

Originally from Oregon, Hunt and her spouse moved to the Chicagoland area in 2020. With a desire to expand her identity beyond motherhood, she  chose Triton College for its accessibility, diversity and an outstanding art program.

Art has always been an instrumental part of her life, Hunt said, noting that her grandfather, Tracy McCallum, was a notable artist. As a neurodivergent person, art has also given Hunt a safe outlet for self-expression.

She credits instructor Stephanie Lupu, who manages the Art Club, with helping her grow creatively. As a member of the club, Hunt enjoys connecting with other club members from all over world, from Mexico to Asia. She said the blend of cultures is “fun” and “makes everything more beautiful.”

“Triton’s program is teaching me how to be flexible and explore our world through creation,” she said. “That’s my favorite part.”

After Triton, Hunt hopes to become an art conservator, a dream she has held for many years. As a member of the Art Club as well as Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Hunt appreciates the many opportunities Triton provides to support scholarships and university applications. Through Student Life activities and service projects, she feels fulfilled and is gaining new skills.

“I really want to transfer to a university and eventually earn my master’s degree,” said Hunt. “Triton College is going to help me get there. The college has passionate instructors, which makes the college stand out.”
