Letzy Bahena-Aviles of Maywood chose to attend Triton College for a bevy of reasons: it was close to home, cost effective and known for its outstanding instructors. Most importantly, she was inspired and motivated by the Scholars Program.

“Enrolling at Triton College and meeting Dr. Michael Flaherty [director of Triton’s Scholars Program], felt like one step closer to my career,” she said.

After graduating from Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) in Maywood in 2024, Bahena-Aviles didn’t feel ready to commit to a four-year university. After applying to the Scholars Program, she was awarded a full-ride scholarship to Triton College.

“I like how Dr. Flaherty’s classes are structured,” she explained. “His classes are very easy to follow. He’s a great teacher.”

Dr. Flaherty’s classes have taught her how to analyze literature from a new lens. After going through the program, she is more confident mastering tests and quizzes, and she credits the program and her peers with helping her strengthen her research skills.

Through the Scholars Program, Bahena-Aviles has also volunteered at the Maywood Public Library. She enjoys connecting with other people, especially children.

“It feels good giving back to the community,” she said.

Bahena-Aviles is graduating from Triton College in May and will attend Dominican University in the fall.

She is studying accounting and hopes to work for her father’s construction company after she graduates. Her goals include assisting with invoices, contracts and payroll.

Although she is excited about graduating from Triton College, she describes the achievement as bittersweet. She knows she will miss her peers and the friendships she has made in the Scholars Program.

“After I get my certification, there are so many things I can do in the field of accounting,” she said. “Triton College is helping me get there.”
