Dr. James Halm, adjunct sociology instructor at Triton College, encourages his students to see the world through a different lens—bringing a fresh and engaging approach to the classroom. That distinctive teaching style earned him the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award this past spring.

Receiving the honor was both “overwhelming” and “amazing,” Dr. Halm said.

“After 12 years of hard work at Triton College, it felt great to finally be recognized,” he said. “My sociology classes are contemporary to every day, and deal with issues that apply to real life.”

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Dr. Halm was always drawn to sociology. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from Marquette University, and later completed his doctorate at Kansas State University.

“During my master’s degree program, I was a teacher’s assistant, and my professor encouraged me to go into teaching,” he said. “My teaching career began at a community college, and I really liked it.”

Dr. Halm has taught a range of courses including Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Social Work and Social Problems and Minority Groups, both at Triton and other colleges. He’s taught fifteen courses over the years, all within the sociology field. He has taught classes ranging from small groups to lecture halls with nearly 300 students, and said he loves the rush of seeing a student learn and grow enthusiastic about sociology. In addition to Triton College, Dr. Halm also teaches at two other schools, both in person and online.

His award-winning recognition came as a pleasant surprise.

“I received an email saying that a student had nominated me for the award,” he said. “Then I had to go through a process of submitting a cover letter and resume, along with my philosophy of education, and two letters of recommendation.”

A faculty committee reviewed his application, teaching evaluations and student feedback. After being selected, Dr. Halm was recognized by the Triton College Board of Trustees during its meeting this past April.

“I was able to shake hands with President Moore and meet all of our board members,” he said. “It was very exciting.”

When it comes to his teaching style, Dr. Halm likes to incorporate lectures along with hands-on group work, critical thinking questions and real-life applications to make learning more dynamic.

“The subject matter of sociology is very complex and great for discussions,” he explained. “I ask students personal questions, like the topic of marriage and family.

Dr. Halm said Triton College has changed his life by providing the opportunity to teach authentically. The college hasn’t “stifled” his creativity. It’s a trusting, professional environment.

“I’m always eager and hopeful,” he said.
