Dialysis Technician

For individuals diagnosed with acute or chronic kidney disease, dialysis is the medical treatment, completed by an outside machine, that cleanses the blood of toxins and excess fluids.  Dialysis technicians are responsible for assisting dialysis nurses and physicians with the technical aspects of this procedure.   

This 40-hour course will provide students with a basic knowledge of kidney anatomy, machine technology, water treatment, dialyzer reprocessing and educational development. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of nephrology care, develop proficient clinical skills, and learn how to provide quality patient care.   

Key areas and topics include:

  • Principles of dialysis and skills necessary to give safe and effective care to patients
  • Understanding the process of operating dialysis equipment and alternate dialysis procedures
  • Assessment of complications, understanding of the underlying problems, and learning of techniques to address the concern
  • Effective patient communication and support

Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the national certification examinations for dialysis technicians.

The Dialysis Technician program is offered in partnership with Loyola University Medical Center 

Educational Recommendations

  • One year of medical experience as a nursing assistant, medical assistant, EMT or other healthcare provider
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Basic computational math skills
  • Ability to fluently speak/write the English language

CCHT (Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician)
Upon completion of the Dialysis Technician Program, students are eligible to sit for the CCHT Exam.
Certification through Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission 
Exam Fee: $225
