IHP E05 - Phlebotomy Technician Training
IHP E05 - Phlebotomy Technician Training
Phlebotomists are skilled healthcare professionals who utilize venipuncture and micro collection techniques to collect, handle and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis. Phlebotomists must be able to identify and select proper equipment, supplies and additives, and understand factors that affect collection procedures and test results.
Phlebotomy technicians work in physician's offices, hospitals, clinics, blood donation centers, and diagnostic laboratories.
This comprehensive 100-hour Phlebotomy Technician program prepares students to become phlebotomists, and can also enhance hands-on skills for current nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.
Students will learn about the laboratory setting, pertinent anatomy and physiology, institutional procedures such as infection control, patient care, specimen collection and handling, quality assurance, and professional standards. Students will practice with state-of-the-art equipment and perform hands-on, interactive labs, as well as engage in clinical observations outside of the classroom.
Key topics and procedures include:
- Basic anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system
- "Standard precautions" and application of its principles
- Medical terminology relating to the circulatory system
- Methods of client and specimen identification
- Proper bedside manner and preparation of the client for venipuncture collection
- Identification of locations on the body appropriate for venipuncture collection
- Venipuncture by sterile needle and syringe, butterfly or the vacuum method
- Performance of skin punctures to obtain capillary blood specimens
- Post-puncture care of the client
- Preparation of blood specimens for the laboratory
- Potential pre-analytical sources of specimen error
- Potential risks and complications of the venipuncture procedure
- Role of quality assurance in the practice of phlebotomy
- Scope of practice of the Certified Phlebotomy Technician
- Process of application for state certification
Upon successful completion of the Phlebotomy Technician program, students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) national certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Career Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 6% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform bloodwork.
Salaries vary depending on experience, hours, and location. The median annual wage for phlebotomists was $43,660 in May 2024.
