Ophthalmic Technology

Outstanding Programs & Services

Triton College’s Ophthalmic Technology Program is highly revered throughout the state. Thousands ophthalmic technicians have graduated from the program since it began in the early 1980s. Triton’s Ophthalmic Technology program holds the distinction of being the only accredited program of its kind in Illinois, and features experienced faculty who’ve worked in the field prior to teaching.

Ophthalmic technicians work under the direct supervision of an ophthalmologist, performing case histories, visual acuity measurement, visual field testing, refractometry and contact lenses care at eye care facilities. They also sometimes assist in minor ophthalmic surgery.

The rapidly expanding field has a growing demand for eye-care services and personnel support for ophthalmologists. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an employment increase of 12 percent from 2012-2022 with an associate degree.
